Wix vs a Houston Agency vs Black Hart: Cost, Speed, and Ownership
Three ways a Houston small business can get a website, compared on what you pay, how fast it goes live, how it performs on a phone, and who owns it when you are done.

If you run a plumbing company, a salon, or an auto shop in Houston, you usually end up choosing between three paths for your website: build it yourself on Wix (or Squarespace, or GoDaddy), hire a local agency, or hire a small studio like ours. We are obviously one of the options, so take our view with that in mind. We have tried to keep this to facts you can check, and to say plainly where the other options are the better fit.
The short version
- Wix is the cheapest way to get something online this week, if you have the time to build it yourself and you are fine renting it forever.
- A Houston agency makes sense when you need custom design, a large site, or a team of people, and you have the budget and the months to match.
- Black Hart sits in between: a done-for-you site at a fixed published price, live in days, that you own outright.
Here is how the three compare side by side.
| Wix (DIY) | Houston agency | Black Hart | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | No build fee, but your time | $3,500 to $12,000 | $399 to $1,795 (Custom from $5,000) |
| Monthly cost | $15 to $60, forever | Hosting plus a retainer, often $50 to $300 | From $59, with small edits included |
| Time to launch | As fast as you can build it | Several weeks to a few months | 3 to 14 days, free demo in 48 hours |
| Who builds it | You | A team | Done for you |
| Mobile speed | Depends on your build | Depends on the agency | 90+ on Google's mobile test, or the fix is free |
| Who owns it | You rent it; it cannot be moved | Depends on the contract | You do, code included |
| Changes after launch | You make them | Support requests, often billed | Edit it yourself, or we do it on your plan |
| Best for | Starting out on a tiny budget | Large or highly custom sites | Service businesses that want calls and bookings |
What you pay
Wix and other DIY builders. Usually $15 to $60 a month for a plan that removes the builder's ads and connects your own domain, plus paid apps if you need booking, forms, or extra features. Over three years that adds up to roughly $540 to $2,160, and you are still paying after that. The real cost is your time: most owners spend a few weekends in the editor, and the result looks like it.
A Houston agency. Small agencies typically quote $3,500 to $12,000 for the build, plus hosting and a maintenance retainer that often runs $50 to $300 a month. Larger agencies go well past that. You are paying for a team: a project manager, a designer, a developer, and often a copywriter.
Black Hart. Fixed and published: a Launch Page is $399, a Starter Site (up to five pages) is $699, and a Pro Site (up to 12 pages with a blog) is $1,795. Hosting starts at $59 a month and includes backups, monitoring, and small edits. If you would rather spread it out, the Starter Site is $119 a month and the Pro Site is $249 a month for 12 months, and then the site is yours.
How fast it goes live
Wix: as fast as you can build it. Some owners finish in a weekend; many never quite finish.
A Houston agency: usually several weeks to a few months, depending on the size of the project, how many people review each round, and how quickly content and approvals come back.
Black Hart: 3 days for a Launch Page, 7 days for a Starter Site, 14 days for a Pro Site, counted from when you approve the design. You see a free demo built from your real business information within 48 hours, before you pay anything. If we run late because of us, hosting is free until the site is live.
How it performs on a phone
Most of your customers find you on a phone, and Google scores how fast your site loads there. In our 2026 study of Houston small business websites, we ran Google's mobile speed test on 523 sites. More than 1 in 4 scored under 50 out of 100, which Google treats as poor.
The builder mattered less than people assume. In our sample, Wix sites actually did about as well as the average: 17% of the 46 Wix sites scored under 50. Squarespace sites did worst, with 66% of 29 sites under 50, and custom-built sites landed at 25%. These are small groups, so treat them as a direction, not a verdict. The takeaway is that speed depends on how the site is built and what is loaded onto it, not on the logo at the bottom of the page. The full numbers are in our Houston website report.
Our own promise: every site we launch scores 90 or better on Google's mobile test, or the fix is free.
Who owns it
This is the question most people forget to ask until they want to leave.
Wix: you own your content and your domain, but not the site itself. Wix does not let you export your site to run somewhere else. If you leave, you rebuild.
A Houston agency: it depends entirely on the contract. Some hand over everything at launch. Others keep the site on their hosting and their accounts, which makes switching slow and expensive. Ask for it in writing before you sign.
Black Hart: when you pay in full, the site and the code are yours at launch. On the monthly plan, they are yours after 12 months. Either way, you can take the site to any host you like.
Making changes after launch
Wix: you make every change yourself, which is great if you enjoy it and a chore if you do not.
A Houston agency: small changes usually go through a support request, billed hourly or out of a retainer. Expect a turnaround of days, not minutes.
Black Hart: you can edit text, photos, and prices yourself in a simple dashboard, and every hosting plan includes time for us to make changes for you.
Which one fits you
Choose Wix if you are just starting out, your budget is under a few hundred dollars, you enjoy building it yourself, and you mainly need a place to send people who already know your name.
Choose a Houston agency if you need a large or highly custom site, multiple locations, a full brand, or ongoing marketing from a team, and you have a five-figure budget and a few months.
Choose Black Hart if you want a site that brings in calls and bookings, built for you at a known price, live in days, that you own. That is most service businesses with one to a few locations.
Questions people ask
Is Wix good enough for a small business in Houston?
It can be, especially when you are starting out. The trade-offs are your time, a monthly fee that never ends, and a site you cannot move if you outgrow it.
Why is an agency so much more expensive?
You are paying for more people and more process: account management, rounds of design review, and custom work. That is worth it for complex projects and more than most small service businesses need.
Can I move from Wix to a custom site later?
Yes, but it is a rebuild, not a transfer. Your domain, text, and photos come with you; the design and layout do not.
How is Black Hart this fast and this affordable?
The scope is fixed up front, every build starts from a client template we have already tested, and there is no account-manager layer between you and the person building your site.
